The comic has changed a lot of
itself – and more than just the look and style.I fear that this book may attempt to re-tread all of the past – and that’s
sometimes where things can get messy. The book stops thinking of any portion of itself as real granite – or set
in stone.Even though all – or most
depending on perspective – could have really happened.
Don’t
get me wrong. The book was in need of a
re-write. Much of the comic had troubles
moving forward – but it also had two of the strongest issues in the first year
(or so, yes…) of Valiant comics. I guess
that I am concerned about throwing everything out with the re-tread – instead of
just the most important sections of the comic.
But the story of Jack being
driven by something between his own madness and the demons within him – that’s
compelling stuff. I wish that the story
had dug deeper into the heart of the past.
This could have even been a great place to pull off a book that
paralleled the old Shadowman – and the old-er Shadowman. Instead it punched it into a VERY quick
background. Three or so panels on a page
with a retrospective. That could have
been a whole comic – and a good one.
I like the one color background
and perspective in the story. But only
as a back to this comic. If it
continues, it may grate a bit harshly on the rest of the comic – and could be
interpreted as laziness, right?I also
liked the temporary – let’s hope – infatuation between Jack and Alyssa. It changed her a bunch – but could also
really help out.But Dox’s appearance at
the end as a ghost? That may have
crossed over just a BIT too much for my tastes. We shall see.
More than a few surprises in here!
Not a bad issue - but I am just having quite a few concerns with the direction of the book since the re-orientation. It's almost as if the entire mess within Pitt never really happened in this universe. I would think that a tragedy like that would overwhelm nearly every part of the world for ages. And the team is split and running. And I might like the new set - but again... For some reason, I just can't engulf myself into the entire realm of this story. Running... room service... Even the group of guys following them - they all seem so trite - especially after just reading the whole story within Justice. The surprise within was the included story of Spitfire. Neat idea to keep it going - and the universe. And the change in Spitfire - both that she's no longer operated by Jenny - AND that she's a governmental operative. And now operated by a government soldier - that may be enough to really turn this mess around. Nice work.
