I am looking forward to the change-over next month - just because the book has so far suffered from its lack of a strong direction so far in the book. This book does some great things, and has a few problems, too. I liked the first story - quite a bit, actually. Not too much happens, and it really focuses only on the development of the characters (always a win) and the trust levels that Jack has with people (and monkeys) that encounter him in Deadside. A good win in that story. The second follows a 'temporary' victim of Jack's as he continues to live his life following his encounter with the Shadowman - and continuing to be the drug mule or carrier. Nice to see this story - NOT around Jack. My criticism of the story is that I would probably end it one page sooner. Feel that criticism. The story still ends in ambiguity, but this way - it's just suggested at closure. Not certain why the story ended with the last patch. It wasn't terrible - but it tried to really tell a WHOLE story over the course of only these few pages. Instead, slow down - and focus on one or two places - then wrap up. Nothing's going to permanently change in this kind of story. But the comic really had a strong effect of closure on the old stuff. Needed.
This feels disconnected.
I know that I am most certainly reading these a little out of order of publication - but the comic really needed to connect much more to what came before. And I know that so much of comics - especially like this failing one - desperately needed to hook back onto what came before this one - AND change. But this one felt like it just was focusing on the changes. And they are coming. Ads in the back are pointing to the abandonment of the direction - and Pitt leading over to the new era. But this one was feeling so disconnected from both ends of that story. Ready for next month, please.
