I had high hopes for this Magnus title - which is strange in a lot of ways. If you've been following me, you saw that VERY early on, I had some lack in admiration for Magnus. It was the only title that I really wasn't following very closely in the early run. And strangely, when I re-read... The first eight issues are probably the best set of comics in nearly all of Valiant's run. The beginning of Acclaim's run was garbage. Here - FINALLY - it takes a real turn for the better - and has jumped into some wide reaching real sets of interest. Build a city - for robots - and it also reflects forward onto what complacency against the robots brings. It contrasts it against the real world - and builds this city. Funnily enough, it's a lot like what is currently developing in the whole X-O world in current production. With Magnus as the foil instead of the 'Unity' team. I don't like the power of the Magni still, but it does have a great way of showing all that can or could develop from this background. And as stupid as the whole existential Magnus guy looks, he does form a nice foil
A big change-over
The change really brings Crystal into the new fold of the Fantastic Four - and I can understand including her on the cover in her old uniform - but loved the fact that the book put her in Sue's clothes - and made pretty regular reference to the changes. I also liked that she brings in something new to the team - powers and attributes that really changed the team - and specifically made her a much better fighter against many of the team there. Nice to see the back and forth between Ben and Johnny, too. The book has taken a turn up again this month.
