This is where Quantum & Woody really hit an amazing stride. It had the ability to tackle an amazingly tough issue - racism - with tact and real humor. I passed the comic to my wife immediately after reading the first three pages - with breaking the fourth wall. Priceless. It employs the interaction with the stagnant frames again. Is it a rip-off from the old Trading Places? Probably. But it works. Well. The noogie comments don't even enter the frames of the comics until well AFTER the middle of the book. But let me read the rest first again. Woody's parodying the shoot the hostage plan - and attempting to get another date again is great. Fitting for the guy, certainly. And the frames with Ninjak - are hurt my soul with goodness good. Go back and read that. AND with the long-term joke in there, too. Even the guys coming in about the guitar - and realizing what he was playing. To Eric's great chagrin - loved it. Even the joke about the Quakers. Fantastic. And the fact that the joke was brought in connected to Woody - but was a black man using the word. Neither used it targeted - nor in a manner intended to offend. But the perspectives are real - and contended. Great work, Mr. Priest. And Mr. Bright. Thanks.
Back at it.
The comic concludes the battle between Spider-Man and the Vulture. It's a decent one - an easy read, and interesting. I still like the fact that the Vulture is an old man, and that he's still out fighting. But this one's WAY too surface for a Spider-Man story. The greatest depth we really get in this comic is perhaps Mary Jane's new haircut. And it looks terrible. Without a description - using her NAME - I wouldn't have recognized her. Nice to see Gwen and her Dad recanting their perspective on the past, as well. Don't hold on to that stuff. It says something when my commentary on MJ's hair is longer than the comic. The book leaves us on a pretty good cliffhanger, though. Will they peek under Spidey's mask? I also liked seeing more of JJ - and the fact that others in the office think he's a dirtbag, too. GET OVER IT!
