I love Quantum & Woody. Almost certainly my favorite comic. Certainly my fave of the Acclaim re-launch - and pretty darned bold, too. A NEW path, new characters, and a completely new look at characters. A telling of story that is strange, odd, out of sorts - and unique. But I never understood the whole goat obsession. He's a great joke - a punchline. But nothing from any part of this story with him really rings out. In fact, one of my favorite gags - with Quantum flipping down the building into the car, and the pause - then Woody hopping in - is in this comic. I also loved the running jokes in the comic. The Cool-Aide (yes, spelled like that) and the red dye - plus the hieroglyphics gag. All of them worked. I even loved when Woody again poked fun at the fact that all they seem to to do is climb. But for some reason, most of this seemed to be wrapped up too quickly and cleanly. And it wasn't really the fun kind of pace I wanted in the comic.
This cover is incredible.
But the splash page is iconic. Go back to that if you have it around - and take a good, long look at it. STUNNING piece of art there. Suitable for display. The Vulture atop a precipice, looking down over the city. Sweet. The story is an interesting one - but a little corny. The OLD Vulture returns - and breaks the NEW Vulture out of prison, gives him wings, and THEN fights him? Call me crazy, but I probably would have taken a few steps out of the equation before fighting. Spider-Man seems almost background to the running story - but two great concepts here. First - Pete's nagging shoulder injury. Great to see him with some weaknesses - instead of the all consuming SUPER dude. And interesting to see him actually turning away from the battle some of the time. Also the back with the Osbornes - certainly will come back again sometime. Just don't know HOW soon. Despite all of that, I really liked the back and forth battle between the two Vultures. Not a bad issue overall - just has some strengths and a few weaknesses.
Tough call.
Both are very good. But both also have a pretty big flaw in them.
