This comic reminded me of the old Valiant in my mind's eye. Ever had the experience of remembering something, and going back years later to re-live, and feeling like it's all different? This comic brought back those old feelings - and they were real. In my soul, I think it may be the best of the run yet, and sets a new level for itself. This may be the comic that brings it to the same level as Harbinger - at least in my humble book. The comic continues the conflict between Gilad and Aric, interspersing the recollection of Gilad to Alaric - Gilad's father - before the departure. Really seeing the relationship and Aric's lack of growth as a seasoned warrior - butting against Gilad's seious sense of tradition. Moment of truth? Gilad's reflection that he may still be a worthy king - and the history remembering his name. The dialogue this time is beautiful. I don't know how much is directly from Venditti's pen, or how much input comes from everyone else, but the collaboration of story, dialogue, art and writing really come together. And now, we're on page three. Advice to Aric - numerous. Full, fulfilling. And Aric retorts appropriately, too. The weather eh? Of course. Both Gilad's reflection of his adventures - and Aric comparing his own... Well, let's imagine how many times - or perhaps the last time - Gilad was stunned by something told to him. Even the experience doesn't equal wisdom line... brilliant. The comic combines articulate fighting, and switching back and forth between the attacks and verbal sparring - plus Gilad perhaps seeing the armor for the first time - fantastic. But Venditti saves the best moment for the last moments of the comic. Aric's reckless attacks have brought. Although won the battle, his desires have been lost. The crown destroyed. Shawshank kind of ending. Fantastic. Two more endings here - the closure with Aric and his new love? Maybe a little over the top - but a connection over loss. Good. Then the two page closure from the governmental agency - a few great lines in here - nad the inclusion of Dorian, too. 10/10
