This introduced the writing of a fan contest - and to throw a bit of a strong wrench into the works - the comic also referred - more than harshly - to the turmoil that the comic faced in the last month. More than likely from the uproar that occurred in the mess of the collapse of Acclaim comics. More than a little bit of names on the front cover, right? And the comic was okay. Not brilliant - but in comparison to some of the tripe that I have read lately - both in the Acclaim universe - and in the old Silver Age - this stuff was brilliant. I frequently wrote about problems encountered when the comics refused to embrace the heart - and it moves toward simplistic stuff. This one had some heart in it - and I think appropriately addressed some of the problems that a real character like this might have had to confront. And it wasn't terrible - but not terribly memorable, either.
From out of the Savage Land
I always hated the Savage Land - and for some reason, dinosaurs never quite fit for me into the comic book Marvel realm. And this character intro is decent - but certainly a step backward from where the comic had gone over the last few issues. This one just isn't as interesting. The writing is fair - and good to follow the characters as themselves, too. Nice to see Polaris's interest in joining the team, and Alex being the impetus for what Sauron becomes, too. But this comic was a bit blah. All the mutants being herded up together? Sure. Let's just forget them However, Neal's classic interpretation is excellent - as always. Except for the Banshee interpretation. Glad that changed over in Giant 1.
Strange
But as critical as I am over X-Men - it's more over its decline. It's still better.
