Fabe has really dug into the heart of what it means to be this pre-teen age. The comic brings a bit of her vulnerability to full force - and her issues of insecurity aren't about her powers. It's about her problems with her family - and the divorce. The comic also isolates her beautifully to really focus on her. I like it.
I don't know why I do. The stories are shallow, and the characters are poor imitations. It's aimed at the wrong audience, and abandoned some of the best parts. But somehow, it works.
I do like this isolation
And the art has taken a serious turn on improvement, too. Seeing Quicksilver's motive - isolationism - reminded me of the false pretenses of so many other isolationist movements. On paper - or by argument - the pieces fit from a distance. But it makes a mess of the reality. The comic really was quite a bit ahead of its time, whether it really realized it or not. Seeing the two mutants - and sometimes heroes - battle was interesting. But I do love the crossover. Seems smarter to have started with Avengers - but what do I know? The origin story continues with Iceman - and interestingly he is painted as more of a pacifist. Cool. And he is set apart from Cyclops, too. Great idea. I also like the upgraded portrayal of Magneto in the art. Great changes.
