For a fill-in pencil work, this was incredible. Beautiful look, work and lines. Some of them are a bit perverted, however. Do we really need someone's back side filling up a panel? Of course, it is targeting a specific market. The story is interesting - even if Faith is pretty much out of the story. Not certain exactly what it is trying to say - girls stay away from boys? The quiet ones save you? The nasty ones are even MORE nasty? Don't know. But it is one of the first places that the comic really takes its own mantle - outside of the shadow of a few older teams. I know it was modeling itself after early Avengers books, but as readers we never could really develop a sense of empathy for these new kids.
Love the 'solo' stories.
This one, especially has a real knack to the telling. Iceman, the youngest X-Man, versus their most powerful villain up to this point, Magneto. It's great to see the inventiveness against such a strong foe - even if it is pretty built within the whole Silver Age chest thumping. Quite a few silly accounts of the era - the parents in separate beds, the balloon up to the heavens, and the James Bond-esque capture and release. But the book isn't a terrible one. I won't say it is coming into its own, but at least it feels like it is trying something new.
Really a tough call
Neither really stands out - but I tend to lean toward X-Men here.
