If you were asking me for a critique of the book, I don't know where I would put my finger. Truly, the parts are all fitting together beautifully. I wish I could put my nose on it and exactly tell where the book needs to improve. Certainly the art has been probably the strongest part of the book up until now. Darque looks to be an even bigger nastiness tha nthe one established before. It also seems to draw from all three lines to create a better than before section. But for some reason - as of yet - it doesn't all fit. I don't find myself running to the comic. But as I have already read the zero issue, I will say that that comic is brilliant. And fits well here, too. Thanks for not doubling up again. The story is good - and I really felt the death of the waitress, too. For a minor character - she really was important to him. Perhaps the fact that I don't really like Samedi - or perhaps that I don't know exactly where Darque yet fits in this world.
But holy smokes it is CLOSE!
This one freaked me out. Really? The New Orleans connection and voodoo priestess? Did Marvel even bother to sue Valiant over THIS stuff? Some of this is like ripping the stories right out of the pages. Or perhaps it's because New U never quite perfected it - and Jim sensed that this comic was really heading in a bold new direction - and COULD be re-shaped into something completely revolutionary. This comic doesn't look or feel or seem at all like much of the past Nightmask - and it isn't all good - but it feels like the author is at least still working it here. And benefits can be reaped in spades from this dealing. It's a rewarding book - and nice to see it going out on a high of sorts.
