I have hated this rendition of Magnus almost through the entire run of it. Confusing, convoluted, and outside of a nice nod to Russ Manning, just a very pale shell of its former self. This issue, at least, was not a complete train wreck. And it felt - once again - that the comic was trying to wrap up much of the story. But at least here it didn't feel like it had to follow along the VERY bad story it had put down before. THIS time - it just wrote a different story. While the story wasn't at all good - at least it made sense. And it completely abandoned all of Albania. This new story of the racist 'Disney' city in Florida set a strange world up, but it was at least not a waste of time. I won't spend too much time criticizing the posturing the female protagonist. Just know it's overwhelming. I did actually feel bad when I read the last few pages - and saw the unfinished covers - and unpublished stories. And this is really the last time that the comic here published the Magnus character - Valiant's initial start with the future world - and its origin character. But I was also quite glad to abandon this.
See..
I found myself talking like the Rocky from the old Bigs Bunny cartoons nearly the entire time I was reading this. And let me say first that the story sort of made a case for how this worked out - taking a gangster to the Skrull world - and then apparently modeling the entire world around him. But as believable as that story may or may not have been, I didn't feel like I wanted to follow it at all. I mean, really? A gangster world? Would the story have worked less - if they were some aliens - or cowboys? That to the side, Kevin. To the side. The story was fair. Get Grimm out there - as a prisoner - and have him battle other world people - and then make him a champion. But I just can't get by the rest of the story. And this is beyond the silly set-up. This ISN'T the first thing Reed thinks of? That the Skrulls MIGHT have disguised themselves? And he has already searched EVERYWHERE in the world - and now they MUST be in space? Wow. This hasn't grown much from its humble beginnings.
