Thank all that is good for this comic. I truly had strongly considered - multiple occasions - with just abandoning ship on the entire reading of the Defiant Universe. Some of this junk was SO bad. But I had relied upon some of the readings in this title to keep me going. When last issue was incredibly stupid - and disappointing - I was ready to give up. This was much better. Strange - but certainly much better.
The comic brought back some more realistic - if fun and drawn - art to the title. Last issue was rushed. And what in the world ever happened to the entire story there? Or - was it meant to start in here? Really doesn't matter. I don't want to go back at all. This one was far-fetched - but got back to the essence of the storytelling that I had missed last comic. Thank goodness. The concept is strange - but told from this perspective it's much easier to follow. The essence of any message can always make a big difference - and hearing and seeing like this made it much easier.
Do I believe the missteps with the names? Probably not. Gleem? Unlikely. Do I think that he would be hunted down by chance? Probably not. But with the development - I really believe it. Comics are a real sum of their parts thing. Writing plus art plus layout and story. To some degree lettering helps - but more dialogue in there. This all together makes the story. Star Wars? Terrible dialogue. To judge it just there - messy. But as a part of the story it works.
The comic even takes a slight break to the side to introduce the Preacher. I normally complain when the number of items and characters gets so great. Here, the story unfolds organically, so it's easy to follow along - and nearly impossible to really challenge. I easily assemble all of the parts together and follow along. This comic should be the backbone of the universe.
Even the fact that the comic cover reveals too much of the end of the story doesn't make me upset. Again - maybe I am too much of a complainer - or maybe I am just happy that this comic wasn't one I had to slog my way through to get to the end.
I liked the realistic perspective on him as a crackpot. More than likely a few students of mine have even looked at me in a similar fashion. It really is satisfying in this environment. Hopefully the comics can stay as good through. Here is to hoping.
