This comic was probably the one I have been most nervous about throughout my preparation of reading for this comic. It is quite bold - and also terrifyingly crazy - to build a comic around REAL people - especially if it builds the comic around their real personas. The comic starts - first page - giving credit to the real people in this. More than likely most of the comic was produced throughout - and their faces were simply pushed onto each page.
The comic started out okay - repeating a bit too much than necessary perhaps the whole Mile High XComics thing - but okay. It turned down when the boys entered a house and picked up a literal Pandora's Box. Then at the comic store... Don't worry. It will be safe in my bag that I leave over there...
Probably a bit too much Rob Liefeld referencing at the beginning, as well. And the Youngblood reference? Shakes head.
The comic is juvenile. Not like for seven year olds juvenile - but for a fifth grader or a kid picking up a comic book. Usually I say that's not entirely a bad thing - but it certainly isn't a good thing.
The comic is clunky. It feels forced, and tough to manage the pages and the story as I read. Sometimes it feels intentional, but it is a lot like I am reading an old Power Pack comic - and not at all the very special Power Pack comic, either. It feels forced and tough to get through.
It fails to address some of the more pressing issues in the comic - and not at all in a MacGuffin fashion, either. The box is compelling - but that the characters became at the box thing is kooky. I wish that the whole white event kind of event were more described or leaked or even winked at more. Just showing the Made in Taiwan at the end of it did less than leave me hanging. I just held it out to dry.
It hurts me that so much of the dialogue around the issue really was so supportive of the concept, as well. It really could have worked with more attention to the details around the edges. As is, it feels forced - and that isn't what the company needed. With more focus and a stronger title - it could have helped this to fly more. As is - it's a dud.
I also would recommend bouncing back and forth with the 1.5 and this again. The 1.5 was more than likely started ahead of time - and finished after this. I will try to go back and read it later - but I can't make any promises of another review. This one has not yet been fun.
