I liked this comic much more than the first issue. I was even reading it in a somewhat chaotic room - and still didn't have much trouble keeping focused on the story. I didn't run to write the review - but the comic seemed to settle quickly on me.
The story feels like it's getting itself into the story. I like the set-up - even if the cover doesn't closely resemble the story much. The art seems to have taken a turn here. I like that the last one had a close resemblance to the Ditko art - but being itself. This one is setting the new path. It's shadowy - and falls right into the level that the story should fee like.I like the direction of Michael - Glimmer - as a chracter. He is a solid man - and thoroughly unaffected by the tragedy and hatred around nearly all parts of himself. Even his interactions with some of the best and worst parts of the darkness. He is a man of integrity. One who works to make people better by doing the right thing all the time. It's a strange one.
He is still motivated by his inability to feel fear. It's a strange power - along with his connection to the other world thing. Falling back and forth between the worlds in cool - and especially when he confronted the two gang members following him. It's probably where this book succeeds so much more than Plasm does. It is introducing one new serious concept each month - and seeing how this is running.
Glimmer flips over - and encounters the demons - literal demons - possessing these kids. He feels real pity for these not so evil - but consumed guys - and then makes the change to cripple their attack - but not destroy them. Then, when confronted on the other side, he again chooses to flip back to our reality.
We don't even really need to see all of the background of why it happens. And Jim's description - or parallel - that I read in the interview about viruses - or infections - that's this. Amazingly - it could even really be just his madness creating this world - and he is able to live the madness, and still fight these physical demons within this alternate realm.
As you can see, I am really liking this comic. It is built to last - and I know it's only going to be around for a few more issues - but through now, it's the strongest one, and easiest mark to tick off in these cold (not so cold) months.
See you tomorrow.
